The Bible is full of inspiring words and concepts, particularly for those seeking relief and comfort. Below are some examples from the King James Version of the Bible:

* Proverbs 23:7 – For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he

* John 8:32 - And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free

* Matthew 5:6 – Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled

* Romans 8:28 – And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God

* James 1:12-16 - Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crownof life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren.

* 2 Corinthians 1:3-6 – Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.

The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours – it is an amazing journey – and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins. ~Bob Moawad

Anything you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe and enthusiastically act upon must, absolutely must, come to pass. ~Skip Bertman

I know all about the despair of overcoming chronic temptations… No amount of falls will really undo us if we keep on picking ourselves up each time. We shall of course be very muddy and tattered children by the time we reach home. But the bathrooms are all ready, the towels put out, and the clean clothes are in the airing cupboard. The only fatal thing is to lose one’s temper and give it up. It is when we notice the dirt that God is most present to us: it is the very sign of his presence. ~C.S. Lewis

We already created a post pointing out 12 step recovery programs but here is the breakdown of what the 12 steps of recovery actually are according to Alcoholics Anonymous. Every 12 step addiction recovery program we’ve found is modeled after what AA originally assembled. You can substitute alcohol for whichever addiction you struggle with and these steps will guide you toward healing and sobriety. Also, this message should be spread to all addicts not just alcoholics.

We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.

Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides a 12 step addiction recovery program modeled after the Alcoholics Anonymous program. They have produced a reading manual available in many languages. For an online version for click here. For the audio download click here.

Below is a testimonial of how this recovery program can be applied to pornography addiction:

“I first came in contact with pornography when I was in elementary school at my dad’s friend’s place. I just turned on the TV and there it was. I fell upon it innocently but that experience left a memory that I still carry with me today. From there I began to have an obsession with women and pornography. Pornography became as a gateway “drug.” I began getting into drugs and alcohol when I was in 7th grade. From 6th grade till 11th grade I was addicted to pornography and sexual activities with many girls. My father and brother were both very addicted to pornography as well. I saw the effects that pornography had on my parent’s relationship. It destroyed it. It was not until the summer of 2010 that I began reading and applying the Addiction Recovery Manual. Once I began to turn my life over to the Savior [Jesus Christ] I finally felt like I had power to push the carnal desires away. The manual’s purpose is to turn you to the Savior. Surrendering my weaknesses (sense of entitlement, insatiable carnal desires, perfectionism) to the Savior has made the biggest difference in my life. Even though I had made the decision long ago to abstain from immoral activities and pornography it was not until I turned my will (carnal desires, desire to sin, perfectionist tendencies, sense of entitlement) to the Savior and used the Atonement in my life did I really feel like I had gained my life back.”

-Mike from Washington
